A brighter shade in an afternoon

Teeth whitening

The simplest treatment on the list. Worth doing before veneers or crowns, because whitening does not change the colour of porcelain.

1 trip 1–2 days of treatment Fits into any holiday

What it is

In-clinic whitening uses a peroxide gel, sometimes with a light, over one or two sessions of about an hour. Take-home trays are another option.

Whitening works on natural teeth only. Existing crowns, veneers and fillings stay the same colour. If you plan veneers, whiten first so the new teeth match your brighter natural shade.

Sensitivity for a day or two is common. Results fade slowly, faster with coffee, tea, red wine and smoking.

A typical schedule

  1. Day 1

    Check-up and cleaning. Whitening session.

  2. Day 2

Optional second session. Take-home trays if included.

A typical pattern only. The clinic sets your real schedule after the examination. Try the holiday planner to see it as a trip.

Questions worth asking

  • Which product and what concentration?
  • Are my gums and teeth healthy enough to whiten?
  • Will my existing fillings or crowns stand out afterwards?

The holiday part

Book whitening early in the trip. For about 48 hours afterwards, avoid strongly coloured food and drink: no Turkish coffee, black tea, red wine or pomegranate juice. Holiday rules after treatment.
